Before we talk about shirts, abayas, or footwear, it’s important to understand the meaning of Ihram. Ihram is not just a piece of cloth — it’s a state of purity and sanctity that every pilgrim enters before crossing the boundary known as Miqat. The white garments for men and modest attire for women are simply outward symbols of that spiritual state.
Ihram reminds us that all people are equal before Allah — rich and poor, king and servant — standing together in simple cloth, seeking forgiveness and mercy. It strips away social distinctions and worldly pride. This is why clothing during Hajj and Umrah must be chosen carefully, with both spiritual and practical wisdom.
For men, Ihram consists of two unstitched white sheets — one to cover the upper body (called Rida) and one to wrap around the lower body (called Izar). Do not wear stitched undergarments or vests beneath Ihram, as this invalidates the rule of unstitched clothing. Also avoid towels with decorative borders or logos. Keep everything plain, neat, and clean.
After the state of Ihram is over (for example, after performing Tawaf, Sa’i, and shaving the head), men can change into normal modest clothes. Carry 3–4 light cotton shirts or kurtas and loose trousers. Avoid overpacking; the journey requires simplicity. Cotton remains best because it absorbs sweat and stays cool. White and light colors are ideal for both spiritual and comfort reasons.
Women do not have a specific Ihram dress like men. Their regular clothes become their Ihram, as long as they are modest, simple, and not decorated. A woman’s Ihram is about modesty and dignity, not uniformity. She should dress in a way that covers her entire body except the face and hands. The Prophet ﷺ said: “The woman in Ihram should neither cover her face nor wear gloves.” (Bukhari)
Women can wear any color, but lighter shades are recommended because they reflect heat and look simple. Loose-fitting abayas, long tunics, and wide trousers made of breathable cotton are best. Avoid tight clothes, sheer fabrics, or garments that attract attention.
Bring 3 to 4 sets of clothing — that’s enough. The goal is to travel light. Remember, during Hajj and Umrah, you’ll walk a lot, pray frequently, and often change locations. Heavy luggage becomes a burden. Prioritize comfort, practicality, and modesty over style.
A plain cotton or chiffon scarf (hijab) is suitable. Avoid pins or metal clips that can hurt during Tawaf or while resting. Instead, use soft rubber bands or undercaps. As for footwear, choose simple slip-on shoes or sandals that are easy to remove in Masjid al-Haram. Make sure they are soft and breathable — you’ll be walking long distances.
Avoid perfumes or scented creams. Do not wear decorative abayas with embroidery or glitter. Avoid tight or transparent materials. Jewelry is permissible, but it’s better to keep it minimal for safety and simplicity. Remember, your goal is not to be noticed — your goal is to be humble before Allah.
