Let me tell you, understanding Hajj categories is very important before you book your package, because it directly affects where you’ll stay, how comfortable your journey will be, and what kind of facilities you’ll receive. This guide will help you understand everything in simple, honest words — so that when your time comes to embark on this sacred journey, you make the best and most informed decision.
The term “Hajj Category” refers to the classification of accommodation and facilities provided to pilgrims during Hajj. Every year, millions of Muslims from around the world travel to Makkah and Madinah to perform this great pillar of Islam. With such a massive number of pilgrims, it becomes necessary for the authorities and private organizers to create clear categories — to manage hotels, tents, transport, food, and other logistical arrangements smoothly.
Think of it this way — just like hotels are divided into different star ratings, Hajj categories are divided based on the quality of services, distance from holy sites, type of accommodation, and level of comfort provided. Each category is designed keeping different budgets and preferences in mind, so that every pilgrim, regardless of financial status, can fulfill this divine obligation with ease and dignity.
Let’s now talk about what these categories — A, B, C, and D — actually mean. They are not about superiority in faith; they simply represent different levels of convenience and comfort.
Category A is the highest level of Hajj accommodation. It is for those who want maximum comfort, proximity to the Haram, and top-class services. The hotels in this category are usually located nearest to the Haram Sharif — sometimes within walking distance. The tents in Mina and Arafat are also of superior quality, equipped with air conditioning, comfortable bedding, and better catering arrangements. Food is often served from five-star hotel kitchens, ensuring hygiene and variety.
In Category A, pilgrims also enjoy quick access to transportation and lesser walking distances during key rituals like Jamarat or Tawaf. The rooms are generally shared by fewer people, often 2 to 4, and include all hotel facilities — private bathrooms, lifts, Wi-Fi, and sometimes even room service. It’s the perfect choice for elderly pilgrims or those seeking a stress-free spiritual journey.
If you prefer good comfort without spending as much as Category A, then Category B is a great option. The hotels are located slightly farther from the Haram, but still within manageable distance. The tents in Mina and Arafat are clean, air-cooled, and decently furnished, though slightly simpler than Category A. Meals are good and arranged in buffet or packed style.
Category B provides a wonderful balance — not too luxurious, but not basic either. You’ll get all the essential comforts like air-conditioned transport, quality meals, and safe accommodation, yet save a significant amount compared to the premium category. Many experienced pilgrims often prefer Category B for its value and convenience.
Category C packages are designed for those who want to perform Hajj at a reasonable cost without compromising safety and basic needs. The hotels are usually a bit farther from the Haram, and transport is provided for all movements between sites. The tents in Mina are more basic, with essential bedding and shared cooling systems.
In Category C, the focus is not luxury but simplicity. The food is wholesome and hygienic, and the atmosphere feels more communal, where pilgrims from various countries interact and share their experiences. It’s an excellent choice for younger pilgrims or those who wish to focus more on the spiritual essence than material comfort.
Category D is the most affordable Hajj category. It caters to pilgrims who want to perform Hajj at the lowest possible cost while ensuring all religious duties are properly fulfilled. Accommodation may be at a greater distance from the Haram, often requiring bus transfers. The tents in Mina are standard and shared with fellow pilgrims.
Although facilities are simple, the experience is no less spiritual. Many people who go through this category describe it as deeply humbling — reminding them of the true essence of Hajj, which is equality, patience, and submission to Allah’s will.
Now let’s talk about another important aspect — the difference between Shifting and Non-Shifting Hajj packages. Many people get confused about these terms, but it’s quite simple once you understand the idea.
In a Shifting package, you will stay in one type of accommodation for the initial days (usually far from the Haram, like Aziziyah), and later, you will shift to another accommodation closer to the Haram before the Hajj rituals begin. This arrangement helps manage the large number of pilgrims efficiently and keeps the overall package cost lower.
For example, you might stay in a furnished apartment in Aziziyah for 10–15 days, and then move to a hotel near the Haram for the main rituals. It’s practical, organized, and usually more affordable than a Non-Shifting package.
In a Non-Shifting package, you stay in the same hotel from arrival till departure. That means no moving luggage or changing rooms. It’s more comfortable and less tiring, especially for elderly pilgrims or families. However, it’s usually costlier because hotels near the Haram are expensive during the Hajj period.
